The Department of Microbiology, SRM Dental College organized a CME programme titled “Immuno-oncology- truly a pan approach to cancer cure” on 25.10.2017 and 26.10.2017. This was conducted under the auspices of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists TN and Pondicherry Chapters. Accreditation for the programme was obtained from Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University with a point of 10. Dept. of Microbiology, SRM Medical College Kattankulathur, collaborated with us. We also obtained a collaborative support from the Dept. of Pathology and the Dept. of Biochemistry SRM Dental College and an organizing committee was formed including all the staff from Basic Medical Sciences.

The programme began with an inaugural function on 25.10.2017 at 9.00 am. Dr. Gautam Pennathur, Former Director, Institute of Biotechnology Anna University and presently working as Professor, Dept. of Chemical and Computational Biology and Dr. Satish Srinivas, Prof. Dept. of Radio-oncology Sri Ramachandra University were present as Chief Guests. Dr. Jayalakshmi, President IAMM TN Chapter, the Dean of Lakshmi Narayana Medical College, Pondicherry was also present as Guest of Honour. Dr. KK Raja HOD and Prof. Dept. of OMFS, SRM Dental College, shared the dais with our guests.

The function began with Tamizh Thai Vazhthu and subsequently a welcome address was   done by Dr. S.Savithri HOD and Dept. of Microbiology, SRMDC. The lighting of Kuthuvillaku was done by all the members seated on the dais. This was followed by the inaugural address from Dr. Gautam Pennathur and a special address from Dr. Satish Srinivas.       The Guest of Honour Dr. Jayalakshmi released the souvenir and gave an introductory talk. The guests were felicitated by the organizing team which included the IAMM Secretary Dr. Mangayarkarasi. The vote of thanks was done by Dr. S. Viswaja, Dept. of Pathology, SRM Dental College. The function concluded with the National anthem.

First day Scientific session commenced from 10.30 am. after tea break. The first scientific session was a talk by Dr. V.Mangayarkarasi, HOD, Dept. of Microbiology SRM Medical College Kattankulathur. Her talk covered Micro environment of the tumour- Bipolar effects of tumour stroma in Cancer

Second session was by Dr. Chandramouleeswari, HOD, Dept. of Pathology, Govt. Ommandarur Medical College on Advanced Diagnostic methods and current techniques in cancer pathology and their Clinical applications

Third session in afternoon was done by Dr.S.Nirmala HOD, Dept. of Biochemistry on Identification of tumour biomarkers— Role in immunodiagnostics – a proteomic approach.

An election was conducted for recruiting the President, Secretary, Executive members and Advisory committee members for IAMM TN Pondichery chapter for the year 2017-2020. The Dr. S. Savithr HOD , Dept. of Microbiology, was nominated and elected as one of the executive committe members.

A quiz programme on Immunooncology was done by the organizing committee members of SRM Medical College, Kattankulathur. A preliminary screening test was done to select the final list of participants. There were about 10 teams from various Institutes. 5 teams were selected for the final rounds. Quiz programme was conducted in a prescribed format comprising of 5 rounds. The winners were awarded prizes for first and second place.

26.10.2017 -Second day scientific session started at 9.00 am. Dr. S. Savithri HOD of Microbiology, SRM Dental College delivered a talk on Cancer vaccines the past, the present status and future prospects.

The next session was done by Dr. Vasanthi Sridhar, Deputy Director, Kings Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research. Her topic covered “What is new in cancer Immunotherapy? Moving beyond vaccine, the beginning of end of cancer.”

This was followed by   Poster presentation by students from nearly 10 colleges. Total number of 26 posters were presented. Some of the posters were the current work dealt by the participants and some were on review. They were judged by a team of judges comprising of Dr. S. Savithri, Dr. Vasanthi Sridhar and Dr.S. Nirmala. Best posters were chosen on a consensus basis. Two of the students were awarded first prize , 2 were awarded 2nd prizes and two were awarded 3rd Prize.
There were about nearly 180 delegates registered from various Educational Institutions namely Medical, Dental and Arts and Science colleges.

A valedictory function was held in the afternoon of 26.10.2017 around 2.00pm. Prizes were awarded for both the winners of quiz competition and poster competition. Certificates of merit were issued along with prizes in the form of books. Certificates of participation, appreciation for guest lectures and for resource persons were distributed. This certificate is accorded with a Credential point of 10 points from The TN Dr. MGR Medical University. Guest speakers were felicitated with mementos and certificate of appreciation. Accreditation is also obtained from TN Medical Council exclusively for medical personnel amongst the delegates. Feedback forms were collected and sent the to TN Dr. MGR Medical University.

The entire programme was conducted at TRP auditorium, SRM University, Ramapuram Campus, obtaining whole hearted help from the management College administration and other hospitality services.
